Academy of Music for the Blind

AMB is a nonprofit institution that solely addresses the needs of blind musically talented students 5-to-18 years of age. Remote classes and onsite classes in Whittier are offered every Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. One-on-one teaching as well as social interaction for the students . . . it doesn't get any better!

APH Features:

• The Braille Refresher Questions Program consists of a weekly email that links to a single braille-related question created in Survey Monkey. Participants receive immediate feedback based on the answer they choose. To subscribe to these emails, please send a message to BrailleImprovement@aph.org including your name, email address, and title (e.g., braille transcriber, parent, O&M specialist). The APH Accessibility Hub website gives checklists for things like accessible MS Word documents, accessible Outlook messages, meeting planning, and more. Kyle will talk about the Braille Refresher program and APH’s Accessibility Hub in the workshop “Refreshing Braille and Accessibility Base Camp,” Saturday, April 9 from 2-3 PT.

• In late summer 2022, APH will introduce Polly: an electronic braille curriculum device that brings gaming to learning braille - complete with an electronic slate, Perkins keyboard, and online teacher portal. • The Illinois Braille Series is designed to introduce UEB braille code to adults who are transitioning from print to braille literacy. This two-volume set includes raised print letters, braille, tracking guidelines, practice activities, writing drills, an interesting variety of reading selections, and progresses from uncontracted to contracted braille. • The Tactile Graphics Image Library (TGIL) is a free online resource that puts tactile graphics at your fingertips.
